Zebra Wood Vanity Cabinet

This Newton homeowner wanted some pizazz in the bathroom.  The relatively small size of vanities brings a wide range of materials within reach.  This is zebra wood.  A glass top provides the best protection against water, and matches the vessel sink.  The large variety of   veneers guarantees you'll always find one you like.  Notice how the grain "flows" from one door to the next.  This is a hallmark of custom work.

"Green" Cabinets From Local Materials

Another item that is becoming very popular are "trough" style sinks.  This one rests on a more budget-conscious vanity made of prefinished maple plywood.  The finish is applied at the factory, and is durable enough for kitchen and vanity cabinets.   It is an excellent choice for cabinet boxes, as it is the best combination of strength/durability and cost.

If green is important to you as it was to this couple in Brighton MA, this material should be on your list.  It's all wood, the glues used have no formaldehyde, it's factory finished under strict production controls  using no solvents, and also very important, it's made domestically, with domestically-produced raw materials.

This prefinished maple plywood from Columbia Forest Products is my first choice for cabinet boxes.

Real Wood Color Vanity

Another example of using exotic veneers to good effect, using Wenge in this Andover MA home.  The advantage of picking a color by picking a veneer is that it simplifies finishing.  Spraying a durable clear coat of finish on an attractive veneer yields more predictable results than staining, and it's usually less expensive as well.

Wonder what you can do in in veneer?  Pretty much anything.  I rely on the folks at Certainly Wood.  Take a look at their website for color and pattern ideas!

Trough Vanity

A trough style sink in a Brookline MA home.  The trough weighs 200 pounds.

The drawers are notched to fit around the plumbing inside.

The Building Code mandates electrical outlets at a vanity.  The owners didn't want to deface the tile, so the required outlets were installed at both ends of the vanity.

The finish is a sprayed Benjamin Moore white paint.

Freestanding vanity

This client found a vanity top she liked, then went on Houzz and Pinterest to collect pictures of bath vanities to send me.  She found what she wanted, and the top she picked out determined the dimensions of the vanity.

"The vanity looks beautiful and very period appropriate for the house"

The finish is sprayed Benjamin Moore latex white, the interior is clear prefinished maple plywood.
