Reality Remodeling

A remodeling company in Minneapolis shot a great video documenting one of their bathroom remodeling projects.

The video realistically demonstrates that despite what one might infer from remodeling "reality" television shows, most remodeling projects begin with site preparation, present unexpected challenges, require permits and inspections, and take quite a bit more than just a few days.

Frustrated because he couldn't make a picture frame with his grandfather's hand tools,  a computer science student at MIT developed a hand held router that follows a digital path.

Computers have done more than any other machine to level the playing field between factory and the small shop.  It used to be that only large factories had the volume necessary to justify the expense of high-tech software and machines; now they can be found in 1-man shops.

Communication and projects

Tzu-lu said, if the prince of Wei were waiting for you to come and administer his country for him, what would be your first measure?  The Master said, It would certainly be to correct language.  Tzu-lu said, Can I have heard you correctly?  Surely what you say has nothing to do with the matter.  Why should language be corrected?  The Master said, You! How boorish you are!  A gentleman, when things he does not understand are mentioned, should maintain an attitude of reserve.  If language is incorrect, then what is said does not  concord with what was meant, and if what is said does not concord with what was meant, what is to be done cannot be effected..

Using "the highest quality materials" doesn't mean anything

Huh?  Isn't quality a good thing?

Of course.  Even though quality can be a moving target, the math is pretty easy.  If you need to be at a quality level say, of 8 on a scale of 1 to 10, the quality of your parts can't be at a level lower than 8.  There's simply no way to make it up.

But it's more than just using "high quality materials."

My son is a pretty good grill cook.  So is my friend, who is a professional caterer.  If I gave them identical cuts of meat to grill, which one is likely to turn out better?

It's not the material that matters, it's who's doing the cooking.
