"Yesterday's necessities are still today's necessities."
A mudroom design should include at least three things: a place to sit, a place to put coats, and a place to put small items. The bench seat lifts up for storage and bead board was added to the wall to provide a secure surface to attach coat hooks. Note the grid at the back of the bench. There is baseboard heat along the wall, and the grid allows the heat to escape. Probably a good place to dry mittens, too.

Tall Mudroom Cabinets
This Newton MA family put an addition on the entrance to create a separate area with tall cabinets on both sides to store coats and sports equipment. They made sure there would be enough natural light by putting windows at the top of the walls. Each side has a unit that is sized for sports equipment, and a smaller tall shoe cabinet. Just beyond the cabinet you can see a small bench. The bench has a drawer underneath for a little extra storage.
The main requirement of the project was to be able to stuff a hockey bag into a cabinet, and a custom cabinet design was the best way to accomplish this in the mudroom. Mom was also concerned that the kids would be hard on the doors, so the door frames were made thicker than standard--another custom design touch. |
Mom, Dad, and the two children all have their own bay in this armoire-style cabinet. Each bay is outfitted with shelves and poles configured to each person's preference. The drawers at the bottom
(a useful design detail) are extra tall to accomodate boots. The door at the left of the picture is the entry door from the garage. Notice the closet door at the right. It would have made more sense to have the closet accessible to the entry hall. The coat cabinet is a pretty nice fix! |
